Thursday 19th October :: Telkom's Cable woes; a business Opportunity for some
To solve the vandal menace, Telkom should invest more and fast enough in the modern cabling of fiber optics Create public awareness to the effect that these wires will serve no purpose to anybody or anything if they are vandalized. As you roll out the new cables invest more on insurance and other security measures. An example is installing a backed-up alarm system particularly in vulnerable spots. This may look expensive but certainly a much cheaper option compared to the current Kshs. 500 million spent annually in replacing vandalized cables.
This does not include the business opportunities lost and inconveniences caused to your customers and even to yourselves. The government on the other hand loses revenue from the taxes which would have been payable. Indeed, the whole country suffers given that a portion of that tax payable reduces contribution to the community development fund (CDF) and other projects sponsored by the government.
For Insurance companies and security firms, this is sure business awaiting you at Telkom Kenya. Why not develop suitable proposals, which should arouse TelKom’s interest? The government must on the other hand deal firmly with any culprits who are nabbed. Let them know that they will pay dearly for their appetite for quick and ill-gotten wealth. Indeed, security is one of the biggest threats to business and investment in Kenya today.
